DeKalb elections board approves 20 early-voting sites, extends Sunday hours

The DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections voted unanimously July 8 to approve staff-recommended early voting times and locations for the Nov. 3, 2026 general election and to extend Sunday voting hours to 12 p.m.–6 p.m.
The board approved a list of 20 proposed early voting sites and directed the executive director to continue researching and add additional locations as they become available. Board member Gail Lee, who proposed the Sunday-hours amendment, said the change was intended to make Sunday hours consistent with Saturday and to improve access for voters who rely on weekend voting.
“Prior to the restrictions of Senate Bill 202, we had a very popular early voting site at Agnes Scott College,” poll manager Janet Grant said during public comment. “I would encourage you to continue exploration of future sites in these few gap areas in the county: the city of Decatur, South DeKalb, East DeKalb, Stone Mountain, and the unincorporated area between Emery and Doraville.”
Multiple poll managers and residents told the board they support expanding early voting capacity to reduce lines and increase convenience. Liz Troop, who noted DeKalb had 16 early voting sites during the 2022 midterms but only six in 2018, urged additional sites in population-dense areas such as Downtown Decatur and near Doraville to better serve non-drivers.
Executive Director Recker Smith told the board staff had prepared a county map and site schedule and would remove locations no longer available (staff agreed to remove a site labeled “Living Grace”). Smith also requested authority to add any additional sites identified through ongoing research; the board granted that authority.
The approval followed public comment and board discussion about geographic gaps in site coverage and operational needs such as staffing and equipment. The board’s action means staff will finalize site assignments and publish the early voting schedule and locations ahead of the October windows identified in the outreach plan.
The board’s unanimous vote concluded the item; staff will post the final list of sites and times and proceed with logistics for staffing and equipment deployment.
