Staff told the committee the district currently has five or six ASL openings and that the proposed contract would begin March 31 and run through the last day of school (June 23). "This amount will not exceed $34,500 for the services," the staff member said, adding the vendor's standard rate is $80 per hour and $120 per hour for overtime.
Committee members asked whether the interpreter position was part of the district's Science of Learning program and whether it would serve a single child or a classroom; staff said the position serves a classroom (about 22 students in this instance) and that interpreters help translate instruction for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students so they can participate across classes and activities. Staff also noted some interpreters are district employees and sometimes travel with students for extracurricular activities.
The chair moved to approve the special education contract with the ASL vendor, subject to the stated not‑to‑exceed amount; the committee voted aye and the motion passed.
Staff said the district is finalizing other interpreter and family engagement contracts and plans to continue reviewing contract coverage for special education programs.
