Union City awards $22,295 contract to fix sinkhole at Municipal Lot #1

The Borough of Union City voted Aug. 13 to hire Mansfield to repair a sinkhole and failing pipe at Municipal Lot #1 at a cost of $22,295. The motion, made by Councilor Steadman and seconded by Councilor Osborn, carried unanimously.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips said the sinkhole had left the 24-inch clay tile compromised; engineers including Tim Wells and consultant Bob Carpenter (Insight) recommended replacing the tile, reconnecting the pipes feeding the sinkhole to the 24" line, installing a larger catch basin adjacent to the sinkhole and replacing roughly 10 feet of pipe. Mansfield submitted a bid of $22,295; McLallen Construction’s estimate was $23,450. Both contractors required the borough to provide a truck during the work.
Council approved contracting with Mansfield and directed Public Works to coordinate required borough equipment and scheduling. The motion recorded at the meeting specified the scope as replacement of approximately 10 feet of pipe, installation of a larger catch basin, reconnection of pipes and closing the sinkhole.
