North Chevy Chase plans May Arbor Day event and outlines tree removals and replacements

The Village of North Chevy Chase is planning a combined Arbor Day and Earth Day celebration for May 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Church grounds, the council recorded on Feb. 17.
Treasurer Geetika Sripathi proposed the date and described proposed activities including a tree‑planting ceremony, a walking tour by Village arborist Richard Jones, presentations by Nature Forward and Compost Crew, plant sales by Nature by Design, and children’s activities. The council noted resident interest in community events and acknowledged that volunteer organizers will be essential.
Manager Dana Peterson said Environment Committee members will help with the event and could assist in updating the Village’s tree ordinance/tree policy to strengthen the tree canopy and recommend planting species and locations for spring and fall plantings.
Peterson reiterated plans for eight tree removals and additional prunings and said the arborist will mark trees with ribbons and paint so residents are aware. The manager will send the tree-removal list to the three contracted tree firms to run a "mini competition" and select the lowest estimate for the work; residents will have input on replacement species.
Next steps include event logistics and volunteer coordination for May 2, completion of the tree selection and bidding process, and any ordinance review by the Environment Committee.
