Board approves budget amendments to fund missed purchases, curriculum gap-year textbooks and pay correction

The Giles County school board voted to approve budget amendments that move money from fund balance to cover a missed vendor purchase, curriculum gap-year textbook orders, and a corrective amount for an omitted 2% raise.

Staff explained that a purchase attributed to Mr. Evans was not completed before the June 30 fiscal deadline and that finance agreed to roll the funds over so the district could complete the purchase. Staff also asked the board to approve $330,000 from fund balance to purchase social-studies, math and English-language-arts materials to cover two "gap years" created after the Department of Education extended adoption cycles from six to eight years. Separately, staff said a budget planning oversight left the board27s 2% raise out of the current budget and requested funds to correct that omission.

"We asked for 330,000 to be rolled out of fund balance so that we can purchase the social studies, information, math, and ELA," a staff member told the board. The staff member also said finance would roll forward previously obligated purchases and that some curriculum items would require county-court approval because they extend beyond the fiscal year.

Dr. Ferrier called for a motion; the record shows the first motion was made by Mister McAllister and seconded by Missus McCloud and was advanced by voice vote. Staff then noted that the curriculum gap-year purchases required a separate motion; the board moved and approved that motion, recorded in the minutes as moved by Mister McLeod and seconded by Mister Summers.

The board also reviewed and approved the district27s 2026-27 annual agenda and instructional-fee proposals, including a base $20 activity fee at most schools. The fee motion passed by voice vote.

Next steps: staff will complete procurement using the approved transfers and will present any items requiring county-court approval to the county commission on the scheduled date.
