Council hears safety study citing 38 crashes at Jones Bridge/Kensington Parkway intersection

The Village of North Chevy Chase reviewed a traffic engineering study on Jan. 20 that identified safety problems at the Connecticut Avenue, Jones Bridge Road and Kensington Parkway intersection.
Village Manager Dana Peterson presented preliminary findings from Brudis & Associates, saying the firm validated resident concerns about long queues, near-misses and visibility issues — particularly where foliage and stop lines limit sight lines at the Jones Bridge/Kensington Parkway junction. Peterson said the study cited 38 reported crashes at that location between 2021 and 2023 and that the final report will emphasize four near-term recommendations for improvements.
Vice Chair Maury Mechanick told the council he had alerted District 18 delegates at a nearby townhall meeting and that those delegates would receive a copy of the study and recommendations. Peterson said the final study will be shared with county and state stakeholders to pursue improvements that likely require coordination beyond village authority.
Council did not vote on specific improvements at the meeting; staff will circulate the final report when Brudis & Associates completes its updates and pursue engagement with Montgomery County and other regional partners as appropriate.
