Arborist rates Queen Street oak 'level two' risk; town to get fence options

An ISA-certified arborist presented a Queen Street oak tree risk assessment to the Onancock Town Council on Aug. 26, 2024, concluding the tree’s risk level is two and offering several mitigation and long-term care options.
Mark Belknap said he evaluated the tree’s crown, branches, trunk and root system from multiple angles and based his findings on target assessment, tree assessment and overall risk assessment. One mitigation option in his report is installing a protective fence surrounding the tree at least 80 feet from the trunk. Town Manager Matt Spuck said he will provide fence options and pricing for council consideration.
Residents spoke in support of protective measures. Mary Clements thanked the arborist, described a yellow ribbon campaign she started to draw attention to the tree and urged the council to consider using the tree as a marketing feature with a commemorative plaque. Gina Chapman asked whether community fundraising could help pay for mitigation work.
The council did not take immediate action beyond asking staff for fence options and pricing; further discussion and cost information were expected at a later meeting.
