Maplewood-Richmond Heights hears update on special-education services and IEP compliance

Director (speaker S2) told the board the district is running about a 16% eligibility rate for K–12 students receiving supported services, compared with about 13% statewide and roughly 15% at the county level. He said enrollment and IEP counts are fluid and that official snapshots come in September and December.

The presentation focused on a new IEP process the district calls "charting the life course." Director S2 said the district has begun sending families an IEP survey and using results to inform staff, and reported, "we received a 100% compliance from DESE with our compliance review," attributing that result to recent process changes.

Board members asked for disaggregated data by building and subgroup; Director S2 offered to provide building-level breakdowns after the meeting. The director also discussed academic targets tied to the district's benchmarks: the district is aiming for 50% of students to meet or exceed benchmark growth and for students receiving services to reach the 60th percentile growth target, while acknowledging a recent assessment-tool change affected baselines.

Director S2 described progress on other measures: a social-behavior metric showing 74% of individual goals in progress and an IEP-quality score averaging 95 (above the 85% target) across case managers. He said the district will return with updated benchmark results after the next assessment round.

Next steps: staff will provide requested building-level breakdowns and continue implementing the charting-the-life-course process and related professional development. The board took no formal vote on these items during the session.
