Maplewood council advances zoning change to allow emergency overnight shelters; final vote set for next meeting

The Maplewood City Council on March 24 read, for first and second readings, Bill 63-14, which would amend Chapter 56 of the code to allow emergency overnight shelters as a conditional use in the Public Activity and Arterial Business districts.
Council members and staff said the change responds to planning work and recommendations from the Planning and Zoning body. Council gave members and the public an opportunity to discuss the proposal; a council speaker thanked Planning and Zoning (PNZ) and city staff for preparing the bill so Maplewood could "have the opportunity to get overnight shelter, as a conditional use." The second (final) reading and formal vote were scheduled for a subsequent council meeting to allow additional review and any comment before final adoption.
Council members signaled they will continue the conversation at the next meeting and that advice from the city attorney and public input would inform the final action.
No final vote was recorded on March 24; the council completed readings and deferred final passage.
