County finance officer reports mixed sales-tax results; summer months will be decisive

Fremont County’s budget and finance officer, Sean Sutton, presented May and June 2026 sales-and-use tax totals and said the next several months will determine whether 2026 finishes ahead of 2025.
"Starting with May 2026, total collections for general fund were $827,102. This is $17,482 less than 2025," Sutton said, and reported year-to-date general-fund collections of $3,846,688, which he said are $178,884 more than 2025 and $305,021 ahead of budget.
Sutton delivered separate figures for other local tax streams: a June 2026 auto-use sales-tax total of $142,336 (down $31,836 from 2025) with year-to-date auto-use at $725,276 (down $35,380 but ahead of budget by $90,901); May 2026 lodging tax totaled $4,674 (down $27,589 vs. 2025); retail sales tax for May 2026 was $551,402 (down $11,654) with YTD retail collections of $2,564,460 (up $119,258 and ahead of budget by $64,460); and sheriff auto-use collections for June 2026 were $94,891 (down $21,224) with YTD $183,519 (down $23,586 but ahead of budget by $58,519).
Sutton cautioned that summer and tourism months — June and September in particular — will shape final collections: "These are, as I refer to them, our go months, our summer months when we have a lot of tourism. So looking forward to see, what these next 4 months bring and, continue to report on these numbers as they come through."
