Mentor program lauded; board adopts School Forest at Loon Lake

Kansas Dachel, leader of the Mentor (Chippewa County/New Auburn) program, told the New Auburn School District board on May 19 that the program has pivoted to using high school mentors after a shortage of adult volunteers. "[The] Mentor Chippewa County/New Auburn program was off to a great start but due to lack of adult mentors she has shifted over to High School Students to keep rolling the program," Dachel said, adding that the change has had "very significant impact" on connections with younger students.
Agriscience teacher and FFA advisor Madelin Abbatacola asked the board to adopt a School Forest on Loon Lake and add the area to the LEAF rolls. President Louise Cody moved to approve the request and the board voted unanimously to adopt the School Forest and add it to LEAF records.
Board members did not debate the presentation at length; the approval was recorded as a 5-0 vote. The School Forest adoption creates an education resource for environmental and agriscience instruction under the district’s existing programming and will be overseen by the agriscience/FFA program.
