Mesquite ISD board unanimously approves schematic designs for six elementary-school projects

The Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees on July 13 approved schematic designs for a group of Phase 2 projects affecting six elementary campuses, including Bridal, Galloway and Hodges elementaries and additions at Veron Smith, Thompson and Perong elementary schools.
Board President Robert Seward said the work is part of MISD’s ongoing effort to “preserve and modernize” facilities. A district project presenter from WRA Architects described plans to replace or modernize mechanical and electrical systems, expand fire protection and alarms, reroof selected areas at some campuses and add ICC-500–compliant storm shelters at the three addition sites.
The plans also call for classroom additions (six new classrooms at Smith and Thompson), a gymnasium addition that will double as a storm shelter at Perong, and supporting site improvements such as playground relocations and improved site circulation. The presenter said the district plans to issue documents in October, return to the board with a guaranteed maximum price in December and begin heavy construction in summer 2027, with some projects running into summer 2028.
Trustees asked whether proposed storm shelters are sized to hold full campus enrollment. The presenter confirmed designs are sized to the campus TEA capacity for students and staff. A trustee also asked whether restrooms would be updated at Galloway and Hodges; the presenter said those campuses’ schematic scope is focused primarily on mechanical upgrades with limited interior renovations.
A trustee moved to approve the schematic designs; another trustee seconded. The motion carried on a 7–0 vote.
The board packet lists the projects as part of a multi-campus phase that district staff said is intended to extend the service life of buildings, improve energy performance and boost safety for students and staff. The board did not take final construction or contract-award actions at this meeting; staff said the district will return with procurement and GMP recommendations later this year.
