Nelson Select Board discusses replacing highway and fire equipment; seeks estimates

Officials from Nelson’s Highway and Fire Departments briefed the Select Board on equipment concerns and potential replacements during the Oct. 30 meeting.

Highway Department representative M. Tarr said the town is weighing replacement of an aging backhoe and loader because major repairs could exceed the vehicles’ value and might not improve long-term reliability. The board agreed to request estimates and trade-in offers and to evaluate using the Equipment Capital Reserve and tax dollars when budgeting for 2025.

Fire Department representative J. Sarcione reported several equipment issues. A uniform dryer is not working; Sarcione recommended replacement but the board asked that staff first seek repair estimates because use has been limited. On the brush truck, Sarcione outlined two paths: a new 1-ton flat bed with skid tank and boxes would cost about $60,000, while a used vehicle equipped similarly could run under $20,000. Sarcione also said the department radio has been relocated within the station and suggested the Emergency Management Department be provided two radios for next year; the board will consult the Emergency Management Director on that request.

The board did not approve any large capital purchases at the meeting; members directed staff to collect cost estimates and trade-in information to inform 2025 budget decisions.
