North Cape highlights student activities: budgeting lesson, debate unit, math meet and 4K milestone

The North Cape School District board opened its Jan. 19 meeting with a series of community- and classroom-focused updates.
Mrs. Bauer reported that a representative from Community State Bank led a budgeting simulation for seventh graders, assigning jobs and salaries and asking students to make adult-life spending choices. Leaders in Action will visit Waterford Senior Living on Jan. 22 to play games and serve hot cocoa, and guest speaker Mike McGowan spoke with grades 3–8 about leadership and the impacts of social media.
Academic activities included the launch of Debate and Argument Writing units for grades 7–8; students will research, construct evidence-based arguments and hold formal debates or produce position papers. Grades 5–8 sent teams to a Math Meet at UW–Whitewater. Fifth graders are finishing a Wisconsin Agriculture in the Classroom essay contest on soil; district staff will judge entries on Jan. 21. The district is also sending student teacher Cheyenne Paneitz at the end of the week.
In early childhood news, 4K celebrated its 50th day of school with family-counting activities and an author study planned around Jan Brett books.
