North Cape School highlights student programs, field trips and staff projects

At the Oct. 27 board meeting in Franksville, North Cape School District staff presented a series of "Good News" items highlighting student engagement, staff professional development and extracurricular activities.
Mrs. Lentz and Ms. Visalda reported that Leaders in Action grew by 16 new members this year — 30 total — and that students participated in a half-day leadership training with Mike McGowan. Mrs. Lentz said the club visited Waterford Senior Living on Oct. 23 to play bingo with residents; "one of the residents told us it was the best day she had in a long time," she said. The guidance update also noted ongoing counseling visits with "Charlie," a resource several students meet with weekly.
Elementary and middle-school music teacher Ms. Childers told the board that students have been focusing on musical fundamentals and are preparing songs for the winter concert. The 4K through 2nd grade classes recently visited the Raymond Fire Station, where students watched a fire-safety video, sat in emergency vehicles, and each had the opportunity to use a real fire hose; North Cape's Hannah Owen led a talk about her role as an EMT during the visit.
School staff announced that first-grade teacher Mrs. Harris will present at the SLATE Conference in Wisconsin Dells in December; her capstone project, "Grade 1 Phonics - School AI Space - Blast Off with Zaylo," is published on the WISELearn Resources Library. Chess Club began Oct. 8 with 12 students in grades 5—8 and meets weekly under advisors Mr. Saunders and Mrs. Bernacki. The district also welcomed a UW-Whitewater student teacher, Cheyenne Paneitz, who is assisting through mid-January under Mrs. Bauer's supervision.
Staff thanked community supporters: CESA 2 provided a $1,000 mini grant to sustain the guidance program, and Lisa Ramlow of State Farm Insurance in Wind Lake donated $500 to launch a Lego Club after the district's grant application was not funded.
In old-business remarks the facilities update noted that the gym floor stencil and touchups were scheduled for Thursday and Friday and that staff would receive guidance on cleaning and maintenance (referred to as an "Indoor zamboni"). Champions before- and after-care was described as an active program the district encourages families to use.
The meeting minutes record these items as informational updates; no board action was required for the Good News items. The meeting adjourned at 6:04 p.m.
