North Cape board: Early-year screening finds far fewer students need Personal Reading Plans

The North Cape School District Board of Education on Sept. 15 heard start-of-year classroom updates and early literacy benchmarking results, with staff reporting that just one student currently requires a Personal Reading Plan after initial AimswebPlus screening — a marked decline from 13 students last year.
Mrs. Peter (staff member) told the board that 4K students are settling into routines, engaging with sensory and dramatic-play areas, and beginning a thematic unit on colors. "We are learning so much in 4K and we are very excited about the upcoming year!" she said. She and Mrs. Serak described kindergarten show-and-tell, 5K listening activities, and new third-grade reading units that have students "loving" series fiction.
Staff said AimswebPlus benchmarking is being completed under Act 20 requirements. Grades 1–3 testing is finished and individual score letters have been sent to families; 4K testing is scheduled to begin Wednesday and 5K testing will continue through the week. According to the report, students are being assessed on Letter Naming Fluency, Letter Word Sound Fluency, Oral Reading Fluency, initial sounds and vocabulary.
"We always appreciate hearing the good news," said Dan Hying, board president, and suggested producing a video that could show students’ progress from the start of the year to the end of the year.
The board did not debate any changes to assessment practices at the meeting. The superintendent also reminded the board of the district’s Oct. 27 budget hearing, annual meeting and regular meeting schedule.
What’s next: staff will continue scheduled AimswebPlus testing for 4K and 5K and report results to families as required; no policy changes were proposed at the meeting.
