Long Beach commissioners press for coordinated review of APC zoning rewrite, tighten permit expirations and approve several permits

On permit administration, commissioners agreed to enforce existing expiration rules more consistently. Staff summarized that permits are typically valid for one year with defined extension options (four‑month and six‑month extensions, with fee implications). Commissioners directed staff to explore iWORKS configuration to flag upcoming expirations and to start enforcing current expiration language rather than routinely approving historically old permits that predated system use.
The commission approved two sand‑maintenance permits (permits #587 and #588) for Lakeshore Drive properties with conditions: staff will meet contractors on site during work, and applicants must provide before/after photos. Commissioners stressed dune and dune‑grass protections, noting jurisdictional limits between the town and state agencies for shoreline areas.
The commission also approved a salt‑storage permit (#596) for a vinyl/quonset‑style structure at the town maintenance garage, conditioned on receipt of the Indiana state fire and building department's approval stamp before construction begins. Separately, the commission added and approved a request for a one‑time, 90‑day temporary certificate of occupancy for a home on Montclair Way; the motion was approved after staff confirmed lot‑coverage and safety considerations.
Commissioners closed with a procedural request that members review APC drafts and attend upcoming APC workshops to avoid sending conflicting recommendations to council. Staff said they will provide clearer iWORKS expiration flags and will track enforcement and fee accounting as directed by council.
