Board approves $50,000 in additional funding to chartered fire departments and creates Fire Commission

The Nash County Board of Commissioners voted June 1 to provide an additional $50,000 in fire payment funding to chartered Nash County fire departments, effective July 1, 2026, and designated $5,000 to the Silver Lake Fire Department for personnel and equipment.
Commissioner Sue Leggett moved the measure and Commissioner Robbie B. Davis seconded it. Leggett said the funding would support personnel and equipment and called for the formation of a seven-member Fire Commission to examine the future of county fire services. As part of the motion she said departments receiving more than $25,000 would be subject to a minimum review audit.
Chairman Marvin C. Arrington proposed an amendment requiring the Fire Commission bring a preliminary report to the commissioners in January; that amendment was denied and the original motion passed.
The board's approval begins a process to allocate the additional payments in the FY27 budget, and to form the Fire Commission with a charge to examine countywide fire services, future funding, and audit procedures for larger recipients. Commissioner J. Wayne Outlaw later asked the clerk to note his separate for-the-record explanation for a different vote on EMS lease rate in the minutes; he reiterated support for his fire departments.
Next steps: staff will implement the additional payments as part of the FY27 budget process and work with commissioners to establish Fire Commission membership, charge, and reporting deadlines.
