The Pearisburg Town Council voted March 10 to approve a 50/50 matching contribution, up to $7,000 total, to support a proposed veterans memorial flagpole and lighting at East Side Cemetery.
Angela and Ken Weidman presented the request during the Property & Recreation committee report, saying the project would include a commercial-grade flagpole, lighting, and a plaque recognizing veterans interred at the site. The committee recommended Council approve the match provided the applicant secures the remaining funds and a formal agreement is executed by the Town Manager and Town Attorney.
Town Attorney James A. Hartley told Council he researched the cemetery’s ownership history, noting it has not been formally owned in recent decades and that Civil War-era deeds were reviewed to confirm a suitable location that avoids existing graves and offers good visibility from Wenonah and Fort Branch roads. The Weidmans said fundraising to date totals $1,150, with $560 collected the prior week.
Mayor Robert Dickerson and all councilmembers voted to approve the recommendation. The action is contingent on the applicants raising the matching funds and signing a formal maintenance and funding agreement prepared by town staff.
