CalvertHealth highlights national awards, 5-star CMS rating and plans to expand North Beach services

CalvertHealth officials updated the North Beach Town Council on Nov. 13, saying the hospital has earned multiple national recognitions and is pursuing local expansions to increase access to primary and outpatient care.
"CalvertHealth was named one of the top 100 hospitals in the country by Forbes," a CalvertHealth representative told the council, and the system also cited Healthgrades and American Heart Association awards and a 5-star rating from CMS. Kasha Sweeney, identified in the presentation as senior vice president for strategy and transformation, said the recognition reflects organizational focus on quality and safety.
Sweeney said the system's five-year strategic plan centers on six focus areas — culture and confidence, primary care, outpatient services, clinical service lines, community hospital care and partnerships — and that at the midpoint the organization was "56% of the way towards achieving those 367 objectives." She described growth in volumes and personnel: "We're right at 35,000 visits annually" to the emergency department and, she said, roughly "97,000 visits" in the medical group, plus about 409 deliveries and nearly 3,400 surgical procedures in the year reported.
On local access, CalvertHealth told the council it saw "just over 7,000 patients" at its North Beach community center and seeks to increase that number by adding providers and space. The presenters said they have recruited six new primary-care providers systemwide and highlighted Twin Beaches Community Health Center as a site for expansion; they also said an application to the Maryland Hospital Bond Grant Program has been recommended to provide funds for additional exam rooms at Twin Beaches and that state budget approval remains pending.
CalvertHealth discussed several clinical programs and infrastructure projects: a Duke Health strategic partnership for cancer care and a new clinical trials program, bariatric program accreditation and expansion of orthopedics with an employed practice led locally by Dr. Uday Patel. Presenters noted recent investments including new robotic surgery capabilities and an MRI relocation into the hospital to provide on-site imaging.
The presentation closed with plans for a new 15,000-square-foot women's health center on the hospital campus and renovations to the Family Birth Center, including combined labor-delivery-postpartum rooms. Council members thanked the presenters and had no extended follow-up questions during the meeting. The presentation materials were referenced as available on the town's board-docs site.
The council meeting proceeded after the presentation to routine reports and business items; CalvertHealth's update did not include any formal town action or vote.
