Town Manager Hoffman told the Kensington Mayor and Council on Dec. 18 that an ordinance proposing the sale of Joseph Park (3420 Plyers Mill Road) will be presented at the Jan. 8, 2025 meeting and a public hearing scheduled for Feb. 12, 2025 to collect public comment.
Council Member Lichter asked that the town provide background material for the public record before the Feb. 12 hearing, including the financial implications of a sale and alternative financing approaches such as bonds, tax options, or delaying other projects.
During public appearances resident Alicia Toledano urged the council not to sell Joseph Park, saying the majority of feedback received at a prior meeting opposed a sale. Mayor Furman said the Noyes Children’s Library renovation has a funding shortfall of about $2 million and that the library foundation is proposing phasing the project to seek additional federal, state and local contributions.
The council did not vote on the park sale at the Dec. 18 meeting; the ordinance introduction is scheduled for Jan. 8 and the council will decide whether to proceed after the Feb. 12 public hearing.
