Committee backs sending ambulance replacement bid to council after Med 2 sale

Glendive’s Street Committee heard from the local EMS representative that the department sold an unreliable ambulance (Med 2) and needs authorization to seek bids for a replacement.
The EMS official described repeated mechanical and electrical problems with Med 2, said the unit was sold for $15,000 and requested permission to advertise for a new ambulance. “A basic ambulance, I think we can get into for under 300,000,” the EMS official said, adding the department already owns a $68,000 cot that would transfer to a new apparatus and that radio equipment could add roughly $7,200 in costs.
Committee members discussed fleet capacity — whether to maintain four ambulances — and the trade-offs between buying outright and financing. Members agreed there is no obligation to accept any bids and supported going out to bid while staff investigates financing options, warranties and timing. Staff will prepare materials for council consideration and return with a recommendation.
The committee’s direction was procedural: staff will prepare a bid package and bring the matter to the council for formal approval before purchase.
