Port Royal’s Town Council on Jan. 23 voted to increase financial transparency, accepted recent financial statements and approved compensation changes including a pay increase for the Town Manager and December bonuses for staff.
Angela Golden moved that beginning the next billing cycle council members receive printed copies of all town credit‑card bills in their meeting packets; the motion, seconded by Nathanael Ulfers, passed unanimously, 3‑0. The council also voted to accept the November and December 2025 financial statements after Mayor Alex Long raised concerns about a Debt Reserve line‑item error; the mayor emphasized that the town is legally required to maintain at least $20,000 in its Debt Reserve account, and the council directed attention to ensuring account balances and page totals are accurate.
On compensation, Angela Golden moved to increase the Town Manager’s salary from $52,000 to $54,000 effective immediately (the January pay period); the motion passed unanimously. Council also approved December bonuses: Mr. Voit, Mr. Fortune and Ms. Ulfers were approved to receive $400 each and Town Manager Tim Smith received a $200 December bonus. All votes were recorded as 3‑0 with two members absent.
Council members discussed what individual credit cards are used for; Town Manager Tim Smith said one card is for his purchases and two are used to auto‑pay online bills. The motions do not specify long‑term budget offsets or funding sources for the salary increase and bonuses.
