Council fills zoning-board vacancy, reappoints design-review members and sets Aug. 25 zoning hearing

On July 14 the Birmingham City Council confirmed several appointments and scheduled a zoning hearing.
Item 45: Council appointed Valerie Abbott to the Zoning Board of Adjustment to fill the seat previously held by Janice Smith; the term for the appointee expires on 11/05/2031. Councilor Vassa presented the appointment and the council approved it by voice vote.
Item 46: The council reappointed April Barnes, Cindy Coyle, Ivan Holloway and Brian Wolf to the Design Review Committee for terms expiring on 07/30/2029. The motion to reappoint the current members was moved, seconded and approved.
Item 56: The council set a public hearing for Aug. 25, 2026, to consider a zoning map amendment (Case ZAC2000And26-08003) changing a property at 5900 Avenue M from D3 single-family to QD4 qualified medium-density residential; the hearing date was approved by the council.
These actions were presented and approved during the meeting with no recorded amendments; council members thanked outgoing and incoming appointees for their service.
