Union City plans pipe replacement, catch basin and smoke testing for Municipal Lot #1 sinkhole

Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips said he and Borough Manager Cindy Wells met with Solicitor Tim Wachter and determined the recommended sequence of work: Mansfield will fill the sinkhole, replace about 10 feet of damaged pipe and install a new catch basin. Once those repairs are complete, the borough will conduct smoke and dye testing to identify any remaining issues in the stormwater system.
Phillips said the borough is awaiting quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving to repave the repair area in Municipal Lot #1 and the catch basin area in Municipal Lot #2. He added that business owners in the area and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified before the smoke testing is scheduled.
Council also authorized staff to seek CDBG funds—up to $100,000—to cover a portion of the stormwater repairs in Municipal Lot #1. The motion to submit a CDBG application passed unanimously.
Next steps: obtain paving quotes, complete the immediate repairs and install the catch basin, schedule smoke and dye testing, and submit the CDBG application. The minutes do not provide contract prices, specific repair start dates or a firm CDBG application deadline.
