Mayor previews possible mandatory single-hauler curbside trash program after council discussion

Mayor Kim Leonard summarized a lengthy council discussion about residential curbside trash hauling that began at a January retreat and continued at the July 9 meeting. "We want to know that we're doing what's best for the city in terms of our residential trash hauling," she said.
The mayor said the city currently relies on privately contracted haulers and that more than 1,000 households "have chosen not to contract at all," which, she said, results in trash appearing in blue bins along paths and in parks. Council reviewed a model for a mandatory single-hauler program run by the city, which would require every residence to participate. "It would be a city program, and it would be mandatory for every residence in Peachtree City," she said.
Leonard said she understood residents' objections and concerns and that council is listening; she emphasized that no decision has been made and that further conversations will continue. The mayor did not present an ordinance, motion or timetable for implementation in these remarks.
