New playground near completion; Select Board asks for further inspection of used fire truck

Jim Adler told the Select Board that the new playground will be ready this week and asked whether the board wanted to save any existing equipment. "Estimated cost is about $3,500 for materials, the rest will be on me (labor/design)," Adler said, and he asked that swings or a slide be retained if they are salvageable.
Chair Brian Mills said fencing is covered by funds approved at Town Meeting from the Historical Preservation account for improvements to the area; the board directed staff to solicit quotes from fencing companies and apply sealer to multi‑use courts once materials arrive. Recreation Committee representatives Carol Emery and Claire Sessions asked the board to develop a clear maintenance policy for recreation areas, including rules for donated memorial benches and mowing responsibility.
Adler also updated the board on firefighting equipment: he inspected a 1997 International 4x4 forestry truck that a vendor recommended. Adler said the vehicle "needs tires (6) approx. $3K" and recommended a full bumper‑to‑bumper inspection because unseen problems could be costly; he noted his apparatus account had a balance of about $38,000. The board asked Adler to return after an additional inspection focused on the pump, tank and draft capability before any purchase decision.
Adler reported the ladder truck (#41) has completed bumper‑to‑bumper maintenance and additional engine #43 work was underway; he also discussed storage (a Conex box) and site requirements (water and power) for equipment. The board noted permits are required for some storage options and flagged coordination with the water company if a metal container is used.
The board set follow‑up steps: obtain fencing and sealer quotes, schedule an on‑site recreation policy visit with the Recreation Committee, and request a second inspection and written condition report for the forestry truck. The board did not finalize any equipment purchase at the meeting.
