The North Brentwood Town Council on June 1 adopted an ordinance establishing tax rates and a $1,280,774 budget for fiscal year 2027 and approved a separate amendment to the FY2026 budget to rebalance several line items.
Town manager Dorothy Washington presented the town’s balances for the period ending April 30 and explained the FY2026 amendment (Ordinance 2026-O-3) is a reallocation of existing funds, not a net increase in the adopted FY2026 total. "Speed camera technician will be reduced by $10,000," Washington said, and listed transfers and increases to lines including town clerk, computer equipment and streetlights that together total $50,200.
On the FY2027 ordinance (2026-O-4), Washington said the council reviewed revenues and expenditures at multiple May meetings and held a public hearing May 18. The ordinance sets residential real property tax at $0.475 per $100 of assessed valuation, commercial real property at $0.6151 per $100, a trash flat charge of $132 per household, utility-bridal property at $2 per $100 and business personal property at $1.50 per $100. The council approved the ordinance and that budget will be effective July 1, 2026.
Votes and motions were recorded by the clerk. The FY2026 amendment was introduced by Council member Dame and seconded by Council member Baines and was adopted as introduced. The FY2027 budget ordinance was introduced by Council member Dame, seconded by Council member Baines, and approved after roll call. The financial report for the period ending April 30 (subject to audit) was presented by Washington, who reported the general fund balance as $1,610,037.28.
Why it matters: The adopted tax rates and budget determine the town’s revenue and service capacity for the coming fiscal year, and the FY2026 amendment shifts resources to cover shortfalls in specific operating lines without increasing the town’s overall appropriations.
Votes at a glance: - Ordinance 2026-O-3 (FY2026 budget amendment #1): Introduced by Council member Dame; seconded by Council member Baines; recorded in the meeting as approved (roll-call recorded as ayes). - Ordinance 2026-O-4 (FY2027 tax rates and annual budget): Introduced by Council member Dame; seconded by Council member Baines; adopted and effective July 1, 2026.
The council also approved prior meeting minutes and the April financial report (subject to audit). The council will meet next on June 15; several members will be attending the Maryland Municipal League summer conference while staff will maintain operations remotely.
