Orangetown sets moratorium hearing on data centers and battery storage, approves contracts and accepts audit

Orangetown set a public hearing for Aug. 25 at 7:05 p.m. to consider a temporary one‑year moratorium on data centers and battery energy storage systems so planners can prepare zoning and siting guidance. Supervisor Theresa Kenny said the town is hiring AKRF to draft appropriate planning and zoning criteria for these facilities during the moratorium.
The board also approved a retainer agreement with May and Ryder McKay to assist with a personnel matter and extended the day-camp busing contract with Chestnut Ridge Transportation; motions for both items were made, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Finance staff reported an audit consisting of five warrants totaling $3,100,000. Large warrant items highlighted included New York State employee health insurance ($1.1 million), Schultz Ford ($300,000) for police vehicles, Troon Golf ($223,000) for course maintenance and a townwide Microsoft Office license ($112,000). The board accepted the audit by motion. Finance staff announced the town issued a 20‑year bond at a 3.59% interest rate after a competitive bid process with 10 bidders.
The meeting closed by moving into executive session on personnel matters and adjourning immediately afterward; the board indicated memorials would be offered for several recently deceased residents.
