The Orangetown Town Board paused its agenda on July 14 to recognize the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps for volunteer service and lifesaving efforts.
Kyle Weiss, chief of the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, told the board the volunteer corps has grown since 1957 from a single ambulance to a fleet and a special operations division. "My name is Kyle Weiss. I'm chief of South Orange County Ambulance Corps," he said as he summarized the agency's work and the need for additional volunteers.
Weiss announced top volunteer hours for the year — including Laura Kelly (614 hours), Bridal Skolen (621 hours), May Passerodi (637 hours), Glenn Alban (812 hours) and others — and named the three top hour earners: Maya Better (888 hours), Jessica Locke (956 hours) and Bella Matthew (966 hours). He also presented years-of-service awards (Peter Romisher: 40+ years; Glenn Albin: 45 years) and a president’s award for Ron Shapiro for board and building‑project service.
The chief described multiple recent emergency responses where crews achieved return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) for cardiac-arrest patients, noting that in some cases patients later left the hospital and in others the intervention allowed families time to say goodbye. Supervisor Theresa Kenny and board members invited volunteers forward for photos and thanked the corps and encouraged residents to consider volunteering.
The presentation highlighted the corps’ need for more volunteers and additional garage space on Independence Avenue; Weiss said the corps is expanding facilities and asked anyone interested in joining to contact the agency.
