Planning director updates commission on downtown streetscapes plan and schedule for critical-areas work

Sean Coleman, Director of Planning, Community and Economic Development, gave the commission an update following City Council action and outlined near-term planning items.
Coleman said the City Council had approved the critical areas regulations public-participation plan that the commission had reviewed previously, and the council received a presentation on downtown streetscapes prepared by consultant 1st 40 Feet. Coleman described potential projects — curb extensions to slow traffic and increase pedestrian space, and a proposed quarter-block street plaza on 5th Street east of Commercial Street — and said city staff will work with business owners and the community on designs.
Coleman also reviewed the schedule: the commission will examine best-available-science documents for the critical-areas update on Aug. 11, tentatively review a shoreline master program gap analysis time permitting, return the Title 19 amendment package to the commission for a Sept. 15 public hearing, and hold a special session Sept. 29 to consider critical-areas ordinance amendments before an Oct. 13 public hearing.
Coleman said staff will pursue funding and public engagement for downtown projects and will post plan documents and presentations to the project website. The commission accepted the update with no substantive action taken.
