Weirton council approves grants, insurance, camera licensing and several ordinances in routine session

Weirton City Council considered and approved a package of routine but consequential measures at its June 9 meeting, including grant awards, insurance contracts, equipment licensing renewals and code updates.
Key approvals included a Community Development Block Grant for $404,588; a workers' compensation insurance contract for $107,161; and renewal of the yearly software licensing agreement for in-car and body-worn cameras with Coban Technologies, Inc., for $12,022.50. Council also approved changes to the city's mandatory recycling ordinance (Article §972.05) and updates to parking fines and terminology in the code, including a fixed fine for unauthorized use of Purple Heart-designated parking spaces and replacing the term "handicap parking" with "accessible parking." All these motions passed unanimously.
The council established a Weirton Youth Council, approved purchase of eight sets of structural firefighting protective gear for $40,167.56, and approved multiple appointments and reappointments to local boards and commissions. A separate roll-call vote approved revisions to the 2025–2026 General Fund budget to account for transfers and project expenditures.
