Clifton council opts out of VML cyber liability coverage for 2020–21

Councilmember Melissa Milne moved to opt out, citing a doubling in the cost of cyber liability coverage and portions of the coverage she said are not relevant to the town. Vice Mayor Steve Effros seconded the motion; the roll‑call vote recorded Hollaway, Effros, Milne, McDonald, Hinderstein and Poe as voting Aye.
Milne told the council that several other small Virginia towns were choosing to decline the coverage. The council did not record further amendments to the insurance option during the work session.
The action was taken as part of a short work session that also addressed COVID‑19 relief measures for local businesses. The council’s decision will apply for the stated policy year; the record does not specify whether staff will pursue alternative cyber‑risk mitigation steps or a different insurance arrangement.
