Greensboro lists cooling centers and activates orange-flag heat response

Greensboro reminded residents of regular cooling centers and announced a weekend cooling center at the Interactive Resource Center (IRC) through the end of August to help residents shelter from extreme heat.
On FYI Weekly host Rosemary Plyben listed regular cooling stations and hours, including the interactive resource center (9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday for some services), Claude College (times noted for Thursdays–Saturdays), and a weekend IRC center open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through the end of August. Plyben also noted a tiny-house community center and other locations with specified daytime hours.
Plyben explained the city's 'orange flag' activation: the community safety department raises an orange flag on days when forecasted daytime temperatures reach 90°F or higher and overnight lows are not expected to fall below 70°F. During orange-flag activations, an overnight cooling center will operate at the IRC from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The host also said the Greensboro Police Department headquarters has a small fridge in the lobby with free bottled water available weekdays, and directed listeners to department and parks resources for more information.
What happens next: the weekend IRC cooling center remains open through the end of August; residents should check city channels for orange-flag activations and specific cooling-center hours and locations.
