Afton food pantry asks for town support; council cites budget process and insurance limits

Sierra Mitchell, representing the Afton Food Pantry, asked the Town Council on Feb. 14 to consider funding the pantry, renewing a request first made in January. Town Administrator Jonathan Teichert said the Local Government Liability Pool would not insure the pantry because it is not a town-owned facility, which complicates direct town sponsorship.
Mitchell questioned council members about the denial of funds to the pantry while the council approved $3,000 to the Star Valley Ridge Riders for a permitted hill-climb event. Mayor Joel Neuenschwander replied that the town had previously funded the Ridge Riders in prior years and that the pantry request was a new budget item requiring formal inclusion in the upcoming fiscal-year budget.
Council members said they would require all entities seeking town funding to attend a council meeting to present their requests before the town finalizes the budget. No funding for the pantry was authorized at the Feb. 14 meeting.
