Stephens City council authorizes Sherando High homecoming parade, declares Sherando Pride Week

The Stephens City Town Council approved Sherando High School’s Homecoming Parade for Sept. 25, authorized use of Newtown Commons and declared the week of Sept. 21 Sherando Pride Week after a public comment by the Sherando Warrior Club.
Mayor Michael A. Diaz and the Stephens City Town Council on Aug. 12 approved a request from the Sherando Warrior Club to hold Sherando High School’s Homecoming Parade on Sept. 25 and authorized use of Newtown Commons.
Lisa Slaughter of the Sherando Warrior Club told the council the parade is set for Sept. 25 and asked for town support. Councilwoman Smith moved to authorize use of Newtown Commons for homecoming festivities, to provide assistance facilitating use of Route 11 for the parade, and to declare the week of Sept. 21 as Sherando Pride Week. Councilman Woodruff seconded the motion, which carried with five ayes and one member absent.
Town Manager Mike Majher said he has sent a preliminary notice to the Virginia Department of Transportation about the event. Mayor Diaz expressed excitement for the parade during public comment.
The action came during the public‑comment portion of the meeting; no other public comments were offered. The council did not attach additional conditions to the authorization. The town’s clerk will file the authorization with event logistics to follow, including coordination with VDOT for any road closures.
