Commission hears public financial criticism, Amazon traffic update and staff project briefings

At the July 13 meeting the South Gate Planning Commission heard an email criticizing the city council’s handling of a financial shortfall and received staff updates on several active development matters.
Staff read an email from Mr. Dominguez that criticized the council for relying on an 8% utility users tax for short-term relief rather than deeper budget cuts, and urged the commission to advocate placing council term limits on the November ballot. The email also criticized City Manager Rob Houston for his role in budget and tax discussions.
Community development director Gabriel Perez updated the commission on the Amazon project that previously went to city council on appeal. Perez said a traffic study for the project has been completed and staff is reviewing it with the applicant; final sign-off will require public works confirmation and, where applicable, city council approval. "We are in discussion with Amazon about their traffic analysis... Staff is analyzing that traffic study and is going back and forth with the applicant to verify that it would meet our requirements," Perez said.
Staff also reported that permits were obtained for new classrooms at Saint Helen (9329 Madison Ave), modular offices at 8401 Quartz Ave, and that grading has begun on a City Ventures 54-unit condominium at 10130 Adela Ave. Staff noted upcoming items: a Habitat for Humanity public hearing on July 21 for 14 townhomes at 9001 Long Beach Blvd and an 11-unit affordable townhome project at 7916 Long Beach Blvd expected in the coming months. Perez said code amendments to Title 11 will be presented to city council on July 28 for feedback and could return to planning commission for formal consideration.
No public speakers attended in person or on Zoom during the public-comment portion; the meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
