Council updates: Purple Line schedule, Maglev comments and proposed 300-unit development

Mayor Jeffrey Schomisch used the announcements portion of the Oct. 21 meeting to relay several regional and local updates of interest to Landover Hills residents.
On transit, Schomisch summarized highlights from an Oct. 15 Purple Line community meeting serving New Carrollton, Landover Hills, Brentwood and Beacon Heights: a test track will be built between Annapolis Road and Riverdale Road without crossing either roadway, system-wide testing is slated to begin in spring 2026, and passenger service is expected to start in winter 2027. He said lane closures are expected on Route 450 and Route 410 during continued construction and the council discussed traffic impacts and the need for additional signage.
On regional matters, Schomisch reported out of the Prince George’s County Municipal Association meeting on Oct. 17. He noted an "Eric's ID" bill—proposed identification for people with invisible disabilities—had a first reading in February 2024. He also said Senator Glenn Ivey described a proposed research triangle involving the University of Maryland, N.O.A.A. and the Maryland Agricultural Center and that Mr. Ivey secured $50 million in federal funding for repairs to agricultural buildings. Schomisch reported the Maglev draft Environmental Impact Statement had produced 6,122 public comments, about 55% of which the presenter described as positive, and that project build estimates given to the association ranged from seven to 10 years.
Schomisch also announced a neighborhood meeting scheduled for Oct. 22 at the site of 7591 Annapolis Road (the former Lincoln Mercury lot) about a proposed RST Development project with approximately 300 multi-family units and commercial space; registration to speak begins at 6:00 p.m. He added local event notes: a Nov. 7 dedication for the new Ellen Ochoa Middle School and a Nov. 11 Veterans Day ceremony at Rinck Park with Captain Karl Watje as guest speaker.
