Committee hears monthly reports from police, fire, public works and inspections

The Committee of the Whole received routine departmental updates at its Nov. 6 meeting, including public-safety, public-works and inspection reports that officials said will inform the 2025 budget.
The police presenter reported ‘‘The total incidents for the month were 440,’’ and said year-to-date calls were 5,163 compared with 2,023 in the prior comparable period. The presenter also said arrests for the month were 16 and praised recent K-9 team performance at a statewide handlers' conference.
Fire leadership told the committee the department responded to 97 calls in October and 1,153 calls year-to-date, and staff are continuing scheduled training and equipment upgrades. The fire report noted 13 all-call responses last month.
Public-works and utilities staff described ongoing work: crews are conducting campground debris pickup, and a plan-reconstruction meeting is scheduled with work planned to begin after Thanksgiving and continue through winter with an anticipated completion in June. Utilities staff said last month they installed 165 meters and have appointments through Nov. 20.
The building-inspection report, delivered by staff on behalf of inspector Joe (who was absent), recorded 30 permits in October with permit fees totaling $4,319.82 and $8,605.45 year to date. Staff said Joe plans to send letters to owners of homes, sheds and garages that appear to lack siding or valid permits to request status updates and, where necessary, require permits.
Administrator Britney said the Nov. 5 election turnout was 2,347 voters (about 2,400 registered) and that a referendum on the ballot passed; she said the council will need to increase the budget to accommodate election-related costs. She reminded incumbents to file candidate-notice forms by Dec. 27 if they do not intend to run.
The committee did not take formal policy action on these reports; items were presented for information and follow-up.
