Board approves school supplemental appropriations and schedules hearing on one-time employee bonus

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on May 14 approved four supplemental appropriations for the county schools and agreed to advertise a public hearing on a proposed one‑time employee bonus.
School representative Jessica Nowlin presented the report and said a rescinded state revenue amount of $145,095 reflected a lower final average daily membership, increasing the required local match by $72,390. She said the district would need an estimated $71,262 in additional funds to satisfy a one‑time bonus for all school staff.
The Board unanimously approved supplemental appropriations #7–#10 as presented: #7 (Gear Up Grant & Title IA Fund 2) $53,627.47; #8 (Middle School Teacher Corp & Grow Your Own Teacher Fund 1) $25,000; #9 (VACORP insurance claim Fund 1) $552,247.79; and #10 (Federal Funds & FY25 School Food ending balance Fund 9) $160,000, revising the total FY2026 school budget to $31,021,627.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee advised the Board that HB29 includes a one‑time bonus equal to 2% of base salary, payable June 1, 2026, for eligible constitutional officers, Compensation Board‑funded deputies and employees. She recommended adopting an ordinance and holding a public hearing; the Board voted to advertise the one‑time bonus ordinance hearing for the June 4 continued meeting.
During the school appropriation discussion, Mrs. Nowlin clarified that the VACORP amount covered SERVPRO cleanup and dehumidifying work at Victoria Elementary School and that additional claim funds remain for other damages.
