Lunenburg schools report enrollment and proposed budget; board approves four-year reassessment cycle

School officials told the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on April 9 that enrollment and budget planning will shape next year's requests as the state budget remains unsettled.
Mrs. Jessica Nowlin reported current average daily membership (ADM) of 1,473 students, 149 home-school students and 29 religious exemptions and said sixty-six percent of the current school budget has been spent. In response to a question from Supervisor Alvester L. Edmonds, Nowlin said the reopening of Victoria Elementary School "went very well."
Dr. Stanislas, the School Superintendent, said the School Board had reviewed and approved a proposed budget based on an ADM of 1,480. The proposal requests level funding from the county, would exceed the local required match, and includes a three percent salary increase for staff (she said that figure combines the state's two percent and step increases). She noted the Governor had not finalized a state budget and that the county's request may change if the state's allocation changes.
The board also heard county finance updates from County Administrator Tracy M. Gee, who said the Finance Committee is drafting a county budget for presentation in May and that health insurance renewal costs had increased; Gee said the county will continue covering 100% of the employee-only base plan and will contribute 33% of dependent coverage.
In other business the board reappointed Mrs. Nellie Parrish to the Southside Virginia Community College Board for a second four-year term beginning July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2030. The board also approved a change to the real estate reassessment cycle, moving to a four-year schedule with new values effective January 2028 on a motion by Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover.
