Board approves hires and requires volunteer coaches to complete background checks and MHSA training

The school district’s board of trustees approved a consent agenda at a special meeting Friday that included employment of eight individuals — some in certified teaching roles and others in payroll positions — and a request to appoint a volunteer girls’ soccer coach.
A staff member told trustees the district is hiring a parent-educator in a classified role who will also serve as a coach, a dual assignment the district has not previously used. The staff member said draft guidelines to clarify separation of duties are in progress and will be posted to the district portal, and that staff will confirm with county counsel whether any contractual or collective-bargaining changes are needed.
“our volunteer coaches will complete their volunteer application, background check, and they will they will complete the required MHSA training courses, before they set foot on their field,” the staff member said.
The chair asked for any objections before the board adopted the consent agenda; with none voiced, the board approved the employment items as presented.
The staff member said the district does not currently expect changes to the collective-bargaining agreement but will verify that with legal counsel and finalize the written separation-of-duties guidance.
The board took no additional action on hiring beyond the consent vote; the staff member’s next steps are to post the draft guidelines in the portal and report back after consulting county counsel.
