Lake operations report: high weed volume this season, crew shrinkage and equipment needs flagged

Lake Operations Manager Brady Mullikin told the Okauchee Lake Management District on Aug. 12 that crews have removed 189 dump-truck loads of aquatic vegetation so far this season and expect roughly 275 loads by season end.

"This will be the 2nd highest volume in the last 4 years," Mullikin said, noting that large mats of eelgrass uprooted about a month earlier than usual and increased July's workload. Mullikin reported the crew is on its second rotation of cutting and is currently hauling about six to seven truck loads per day.

Mullikin said the seasonal college crew returned to school, reducing crew size from 12 to nine; after Labor Day staff will begin the annual equipment drawdown routine. He described recent equipment issues, including a 1,000-pound tailgate that ejected and was recovered, and said the older C4 cutter may need replacement. Mullikin added that a C4 conveyor will likely be required in fall or spring to complete season-end work.

Commissioner John Foley asked about equipment needs for the season closeout; Mullikin confirmed the conveyor need, and Chair Tom Godar indicated where surplus budget funds might be used to cover repairs or replacement. Resident Greg Hurt asked whether cutting strategy should follow the wind; Mullikin explained crews generally cut opposite the wind because of machine size and pointed to weather variables that affect operations.

The board indicated support for following up on equipment procurement and will consider funding during budget and investment discussions.
