Board approves curriculum review committees; parent urges textbooks for fourth grade

The Fayette County Board of Education on Feb. 9 approved formation of curriculum review committees to evaluate state-approved instructional materials and textbooks for Physical Education/Lifetime Wellness and Career and Technical Education (including Information Technology and Advanced Manufacturing).
Kevin Powers moved to approve the proposed Curriculum Review Committees; Adam Fearon seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Superintendent Don McPherson said the committees will review materials and recommend adoption to the Curriculum Committee before Board consideration.
During public comment, Christian Shelton, a parent of two students at LaGrange-Moscow Elementary School, told the Board that fourth-grade students receive workbooks and literature materials but not traditional textbooks and expressed concern that limited textbook access could impair students’ grammar, sentence structure and reading comprehension. Dr. McPherson offered to meet with Shelton after the meeting to discuss the concern.
The Board did not take separate action on textbook distribution at the meeting; the curriculum review process is the route identified for evaluation and recommendation of instructional materials.
