The Education, Sports and CTE Committee voted June 18 to forward to the full Board a resolution expressing support for a proposed increase in the local option sales tax applicable only to unincorporated areas of Fayette County.
Dr. McPherson told the committee that incorporated municipalities in the county already levy the maximum local option sales tax and that the proposed increase would apply only in unincorporated areas if placed on the November general election ballot and approved by voters. He read the resolution into the record and explained the board’s rationale: additional revenue generated by retail activity, including purchases by visitors and non‑residents, could provide future financial support for county services, including public education, although any new revenue would not be realized during the current fiscal year.
The resolution states that proceeds would be allocated to public education in accordance with Tennessee law and authorized the Director of Schools and Board Chair to communicate the Board’s support to local and state officials as appropriate. The committee approved a motion to send the resolution to the full Board (3–0).
