Hawarden council approves hazard-mitigation match, federal grant policy and multiple permits

The Hawarden City Council approved two resolutions and several permitting and licensing items at its Jan. 28 regular meeting.
Council adopted Resolution 2026-04 to provide a local match for a Hazard Mitigation Assistance Program. Council Member Warner moved the resolution; Council Member Schelling seconded. The motion passed with recorded ayes from Warner, Allen, Schelling and Bouza (4-0).
Council also adopted Resolution 2026-05 to establish federal grant policy procedures. Council Member Bouza moved the resolution; Council Member Schelling seconded. The motion passed with recorded ayes from Warner, Allen, Schelling and Bouza (4-0).
On permitting, the council approved a building permit for Gerritson Construction at 813 Central Ave (motion moved by Warner, seconded by Schelling) and approved two building permits for Wielenga Properties, LLC at 800 and 806 Central Ave (motions moved by Bouza/Schelling and Schelling/Warner). All permitting motions passed with recorded ayes from Warner, Allen, Schelling and Bouza (4-0).
The council approved the claims for payment submitted for the meeting and the Jan. 14, 2026 meeting minutes. The claims list attached to the minutes includes multiple vendor payments; one entry listed is City of Hawarden WSTWA for $20,958.04.
The consent agenda passed and included renewal of Class B retail alcohol licenses for Dollar General #8034 (effective March 1, 2026) and La Hispana Grocery (effective Feb. 28, 2026). The consent motion was moved by Council Member Warner and seconded by Council Member Bouza and passed with recorded ayes from Warner, Allen, Schelling and Bouza (4-0).
No dissent or amendments to the listed resolutions or permits were recorded in the minutes. The council adjourned at 5:52 p.m.; the next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 11, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.
