Chief Schramm updated the Muscoda Village Board on Dec. 2 about difficulties recruiting for an open police officer position and brought forward a set of possible incentives for board consideration.
Schramm told the board he received a single application for the posted position and said that applicant did not pass the initial background check. He also reported that Officer Fleischauer declined the sergeant position the village had offered. To make Muscoda more competitive, Schramm urged consideration of several changes: increasing the percentage of health insurance premiums the village pays; revisiting paid holidays (the village currently offers eight while other employers may offer up to 13); changing the vacation accrual policy so vacation begins at hire rather than after one year; reviewing compensation for officers called to work on holidays so it mirrors public works/utilities overtime and holiday pay; and re-evaluating the posted hourly wage range of $31'$34 to attract candidates.
No decisions were made at the Dec. 2 meeting; the board instructed staff to place the matter on the Dec. 9 agenda for further discussion and possible action.
