Superintendent says DOJ and NAACP Legal Defense Fund expected to visit for unitary status review

Superintendent Dr. Don McPherson updated the Fayette County Public Schools Board on the district's ongoing unitary status review during the March 5 meeting, saying representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund are expected to visit the district as part of the continuing review process.
Dr. McPherson said federal visitors had been unable to travel in the fall because of a federal government shutdown but are anticipated to meet with district officials and NAACP Legal Defense Fund representatives to continue the review. Board Chairman Warner Speakman said Board Attorney Tom Minor will continue to represent the Board on matters related to the district's desegregation case until a conflict of interest requires a transition.
The Board discussed plans to advertise for a new Board attorney after Tom Minor accepted a County Attorney position, and they scheduled a future attorney-client privileged meeting to address pending litigation matters following the DOJ visit. Katherine Kimmel was reported to be preparing legal documentation related to the desegregation case.
