Rye Select Board approves fireworks, signs and consent items; rejects heating-fuel bids to rebid later

Fireworks permits: Fire Chief Eric Lambert presented applications for the Rye Beach Club and Rye Surf Club; the board approved display permits for the Rye Beach Club on July 3, 2026, at 9:30 p.m. (rain date July 6) and for the Rye Surf Club on July 2, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. Selectwoman Suzanne Barton asked about cleanup and accountability; Chief Lambert said compliance and cleanup provisions are included in the approvals.
Welcome signs and memorials: The Heritage Commissions request to install four "Welcome to Rye" signs at town entry points was approved on the condition the commission raises funds and Public Works determines right-of-way siting. Heritage Commission Chair Alex Herlihy and Treasurer Peter White also proposed a Town Green veterans monument area; the Select Board supported the concept but asked the commission to consult with the Cemetery Trustees before proceeding.
Heating fuel procurement: Jason Rucker reported that heating-fuel bids opened June 12 came in substantially higher than last year. Director Rucker recommended rejecting the bids and rebidding after market stabilization; the Select Board accepted that recommendation and directed staff to rebid in a few months. He also reported the existing contractor agreed to hold current pricing for a limited period.
Consent agenda and correspondence: The board approved a consent agenda item authorizing the Rye Congregational Church to use the upper parking lot July 11—. The meeting included correspondence about parking from residents Sharon Rimbach and Liz Barrett, which was read into the record.
