The Stevensville School District Board of Trustees finalized and approved a superintendent evaluation tool at its Dec. 17 special meeting, setting the process for a formal evaluation in January.
An ad hoc governance committee presented the draft evaluation instrument, which was adapted from model templates and altered based on committee work. The superintendent, who identified themself during the meeting, said the primary value of the tool is the post-score conversation that clarifies what low scores mean and shapes future district work.
Trustees debated the tool’s length, the number of subsections and practicalities of scoring. Several trustees said portions felt subjective or difficult to score without additional information; the committee and staff recommended that trustees use the evaluation to drive discussion and follow-up rather than as a strict metric. Trustees discussed submitting numeric scores via a Google form ahead of the public meeting to streamline discussion and conducting a closed-session dialogue afterward to review feedback with the superintendent.
After discussion, a trustee moved to finalize the evaluation tool as presented; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The board indicated the evaluation will be completed at the January meeting and that the scoring and comments would be compiled and discussed in closed session as part of the evaluation process.
Trustees asked staff and the committee to circulate the tool and clarify timelines so absent trustees can participate and so compiled results will be ready ahead of the January meeting.
